War on Porn

If you’re anything like us, you’re constantly asking yourself, “What do the Three Stooges and pornography have in common?”  And no, “nyuk” is not a four-letter word.  Well, it is, but you know what we mean.  In this episode, you’ll find people who would rather erode the First Amendment than let you watch porn.  On your computer.  In your home.  We’ll also meet people who believe porn leads to violence.

But fear not, because before the show is over, we’ll grab them all by the short and Curly’s, Larry’s and Moe’s.  So what exactly do The Three Stooges have to do with porn?  You’ll have to watch and see.  You like to watch, right?

I was raised Mormon, am a grandmother and a huge fan of BS, even though I remain somewhat sensitive to language I was completely insulated from growing up. Still, as big a fan as I am, I put off watching the porn show until it came out on On Demand, because though I spent my babysitting days as a child in search of non-Mormons Playboys, something about it scares me a little.

This long pre-amble is really to say I appreciated so much how absolutely clear you were about what rape is, and what rape isn't, and how cruel it is to use it as a metaphor for anything or tossing it into a sentence to add to the "danger" quotient of an argument. I feel the same way about the word "lynch" and the word "pedophile" when I hear it used to describe someone attracted to teens who are young but past puberty. It ultimately probably helps pedophiles and rapists and racists to have these words diluted in their meaning in any way.

So while I may cringe through all the "MFs" on your show, watching it has helped me teach my grandchildren how to spot an unsubstantiated argument or claim, to look for bias that results from ignorance or a purely selfish desire to take advantage of others in some way, and to really question their own opinions and "proofs."

Porn has become a productivity issue in my workplace, I'm in healthcare and it is against policy to use hospital computers to access it--and some people with great jobs have been fired after many warnings, so it won't surprise me if there comes a time when there is evidence that some people can become dependent to a degree that is self-destructive. But I'll wait for the evidence. Thanks, Lynne
